MEANY FEST 2004
You have come to an infamous space. Below is the audio of our first song. Let your imagination percolate...
The MEANY Fest (Musicians & Emerging Artists) in the fall of 2004 was the most ridiculous gig we’ve ever had.
First it was a much more heavy metal scene than indie rock but for some reason, we’re frequently paired with Death Metal, it must be our name like MAKAR is a death metal band name so there were some really hardcore people there in the basement of CBGB’s Gallery. But it was packed which was awesome UNTIL the act before us turned out to be a solo dude playing a beat box and an electric cello. He cleared the room. The Judges shaking their heads saying that’s not the music he submitted. Then Mark’s mom, MAKAR’s own superfan, panicked on our behalf and said, “They’re leaving, they’re all leaving!” ten minutes before we were supposed to go on. To say that the crowd didn’t get him is an understatement. They ran, not walked, to the exits.
So our bass player Slomovick said, “Nancy, go get them!” That was hysterical and well-handled because three out of four of us were so sick with colds that trying to get the leaving masses back to the room felt quite beyond us. Only our drummer was well, buzzing on Oreos and red bull. Anyways, Andrea was so out of it that when Mark was singing the beginning verses of I Hate My Job with his eyes closed she knocked the mic over the keyboard into his forehead while doing a Townsend windmill like power chord.
After figuring out what was going on and seeing Andrea and the rest of the band laughing their asses off, Mark readjusted his mic to lip level and kept singing and we played our hearts out while coughing up phlegm and wheezing through more songs. When it was all over, the judges said they loved us but couldn’t score us because there was no one in the room left to vote. Even electric viola man had disappeared back into the ether making us all wonder if he had even existed in the first place.
It was a fun night, even though only 6 people were left in the audience. On the positive side, the judges and sound guy said they really loved our music and were pulling for us. And all 6 people voted for us, but what the hell were 6 votes going to do?!!
