GREAT REVIEW FROM NORTHEAST IN-TUNE!
Monday February 27, 2006 at 6:12 pm

We got an awesome review by Northeast In-Tune magazine. Check it out!

Some choice quotes in full...

“Makar has a plain-sung, folky, 60s inspired sound. Their strength lies in their fun, free spirit, which shows itself in the manic complaining of I Hate My Job and in Andrea’s jubilant whoops on The Country Song.

“Sometimes, Makar’s musical arrangements are remarkably emotive. The ballad Another Day presents a laid-back, wistful 60s vibe. I Hate My Job lurches (appropriately) from time to ½ time to double time. Alligator Agents, a dark song inspired by a cocaine-wasted real estate agent, sets an interesting 007-ish dark mood. For the most part, Makar are upbeat and unassuming.

Not going to lie, my favorite thing about Makar is the lyrics. Every song is based on an honest, coherent poem. Topics range from hating “The Man” to loving your spouse. Makar also has that rare ability, prized by such bands as Rasputina, to write about unconventional subjects and not make annoying songs. I Hate My Job sounds like obnoxious surf music, and yet, I dig it. It makes me think of those days when you are so frustrated that you break into crazed, but ultimately hilarious complaining. “I hate my job. I hate my life. I hate my girl. I hate my wife. And I hate you!” A personal favorite from 99 Cent Dreams is The Country Song. It’s a cowboy story in which God apparently gives up. And it also features some pretty lyrics, “I’ll find my way home tonight somehow, even if my guide’s a firefly.” That is the tip of the iceberg; you’ll have to check out Makar yourself to get the full treatment.”

EXCELLENT REVIEW BY INDEPENDENTSONLY.COM!!
Wednesday April 5, 2006 at 2:21 pm

"New York's Makar finds a delicate way to mix their influences into something all their own defying comparison to anyone. Maybe it's the shared vocals of Andrea DeAngelis and Mark Purnell that stand out inside of each song. Maybe it's the small things that really start standing out the more I listen to the disc… the piano lightly chugging like it were in a Mississippi juke joint? Is it the guitars resembling the psychedelic sixties or the post punk clang heard in the eighties? Whatever it is that I'm hearing, makes Makar a musical genius worth telling people about. So pile into the van, make it fast and throw on this disc!"

HAVE A SWEET, WARM BITE OF TOAST…
Sunday June 4, 2006 at 8:44 pm

For Radio Marmalade plays Makar’s “I Hate My Job”!

Check out this super sweet station, read the host’s (Heather Willensky) description of the radio show here…

“You know that first sweet, warm bite of a hot slice of toast, slathered in your favorite jam or jelly? That's roughly what this station sounds like. This is the music that sounds as good as hot marmalade tastes on toasted bread. Some of the music's old, some is newer, and some just may have been recorded last week. This, in my opinion, is quality listening, and I hope you think so too.”

GREAT REVIEW FROM COSMOS GAMING!! WOW!
Friday June 23, 2006 at 7:47 pm

The full review from Cosmos Gaming below

"Music: Makar: 99 Cent Dreams

Our Take

Makar is what happens when you cross the current indie revolution with a tinge of folk rock. Their debut album, 99 Cent Dreams, is an absolute joy to listen to. Every song is based on a real emotion or real thing, something that a lot of bands just can't seem to write good songs about these days. This album is catchy and has a sound that definitely stands out from the rest of the bands out there. It's not going to appeal to the metal heads or rap fanatics, but everyone else out there with an open mind will find an intriguing collection of songs.

Andrea and Mark are the two singers of Makar, and both have an extremely impressive vocal range. Mark's singing is typically more laid back and very smooth to listen to. It flows well with the instrumental work, and his vocals are what give the music a bit of an indie rock vibe. Andrea's singing is all over the place, but this is not a bad thing at all (it just might make things a little inaccessible to some listeners). Her voice is incredible and it especially shows on songs such as "All I Know", where she gives an extremely melodic performance that is definitely tear worthy. However, it is her screeches on songs such as the opener "I Hate My Job" that will grab a lot of listener's attentions. They are very high pitched and sometimes can be compared to some of the female punk singers out there (which is an unusual mix).

The instrumental work is superb, there's no better way to put it. The opener is a fast paced surf-rock esque track that quickly transitions into a more laid back ballad style track. Although Makar has plenty of folk rock vibes, there are also songs that allude to a country style. The group likes to jump between more mellow and up-tempo segments, although I will admit that I personally like the more mellow aspects. It may seem like a crazy mix at times (especially when mixing in the opening track with some of the later ones), but everything falls into place.

Makar's debut album is a wonderful trip through a wonderland of infectious tracks that the average person will be able to relate though. The two vocalist aspect (one male, one female) also gives the music a bit more depth than one would initially think. In an industry that is slowly leaning towards corporate cookie cutter rock 'n roll and stereotypical rap music, Makar isn't afraid to think outside of the box and come up with music that anyone can enjoy. 99 Cent Dreams is definitely a noteworthy album, and I can't wait to see where the group goes from here."

MAKAR ON THE RADIO CRYSTAL BLUE’S SPRING 2006 AIRPLAY CHART!
Thursday July 6, 2006 at 3:50 am

MAKAR appears on the Radio Crystal Blue’s Spring 2006 Airplay chart!

MAKAR’s position is based on 3 categories (1) amount of airplay in 3 months, (2) same for 12 months, and (3) a composite amount plus extra credit for acts that the host sees and/or books in the last 3 months.

Airplay for purposes of this chart focused on all airplay granted to acts from July 2005 through June 2006. The top 100 of all 3 categories were counted, and only those that placed in all 3 categories were counted for the quarterly chart.

See the present chart at
http://www.radiocrystalblue.com/chart.html

MAKAR is tied at No. 22 out of 43 other artists.

In all, over 320 different acts received airplay in the last 12 weeks. Only 43 got onto all 3 categories to be considered for this chart. The cut was: 3 songs played in the last 3 months, 7 songs in the last 12 months.

UPDATE 7/24/06 - Rain, what the?? Must be time for a MAKAR gig.

Yep that's right, we could have told ya it was going to rain any day we had a gig. Hell we could have told ya it was going to POUR!

Do you know why? Because we have a gig that's why. You can actually predict the weather by when Makar has a gig. If you don't believe us, look it up in Almanac.

But luckily, it let up and it didn't become a monsoon like it did the day after. WHEW!!! Makar's weather luck is a-changing! But when you go five for five gigs with rain, you start to wonder if the weather man is having fun at our expense.

Anyways, we rocked Otto's Shrunken Head right off his shrunken neck. And if you missed it, then you'll just have to come to Freddy's on August 12. But bring your rain slickers because knowing our luck it will rain.

Missing Something podcast played Another Day on the 8/23/06 show.

The sweet host of the show, Nicole, kindly remarked about Another Day: "I was absolutely blown away by it. WOW, that’s all I have to say." How cool is she!!

Missing Something is a podcast about the things you miss after a break-up. It's also about moving cross country twice in six months and looking for a job from your parent's house.

With some great music courtesy of the podsafe music network mixed into the discussion we think it's a really intimate and moving podcast. You should all listen in and cross your fingers for Nicole and her family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Nicole. Love Makar!

NOT ALL POP MUSIC MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD
Wednesday September 13, 2006 at 3:36 am

Apparently, "not all pop music makes you feel good", this is the tagline for Dark Meat: Music for Depressives.

Another Day was played on Saturday's show because it met Dark Meat's criteria. For as the host declares:

"Am playing the song on tonight's show, because it does indeed bum me out."

"An artist you have probably heard of, if you're hip."

Download Dark Meat 80: Stickin' It To The Man at http://www.darkmeat.name/podcasts/DarkMeat80.mp3

Direct link to the mp3 of the show is located here

http://www.darkmeat.name/podcasts/DarkMeat80(corr).mp3

Be warned, it takes a while to download.

Dark Meat's motto: "Not all pop music makes you feel good - some makes you feel really bad. Some just reinforces the rotten mood you were already in. Sometimes that’s just what you need. Here then is the soundtrack of your dampened existence, your medicated time here on Earth. "

TEA_KATOH PODCAST WILL BE PLAYING MAKAR TUNES THROUGH OCTOBER
Thursday September 14, 2006

Hooray!

The Tea_Katoh podcast will be playing MAKAR tunes until October on their program "daily" and "daily V".

The host especially digs "What Can I Tell You" and "99 Cent Dreams", Of course "I Hate My Job".

The Tea_Katoh podcast is a Japanese podcast by a self-proclaimed: "A pessimistic optimist. An extremely normal office worker."

Probably not the kind of office workers that Andrea and Mark portray in the upcoming "I Hate My Job" video.

MAKAR IS BIG IN JAPAN
Saturday September 16, 2006 at 4:50 pm

Recently, quite a few Japanese podcasts have played MAKAR

The Tea_Katoh podcast will be playing MAKAR tunes until October on their program "daily" and "daily V".

We also received a very enthusiastic response from the Rapture podcast!

The Country Song was played on My Cup of Tea podcast based in Nagoya, Japan.

Makar's debut 18-song album 99 Cent Dreams was selected to be played on Yellow Beat.

Makar ROCKS Japan! Now all we need is that all expenses paid tour... But in the meantime, do yourself a favor and listen to these podcasts!

Mark: Andrea could finally use those Japanese language skills!

Andrea: That was back in high school and the course was only a month long. I doubt I even could converse with a 3-year old.

Mark: Well, maybe with a 2-year old!

Actually, Andrea says she can't even do that now. So one of our myspace friends (Hannahtastic) happily gave us a 2 year old's saying --

Makar wa sugoi desu!

Translation: Makar is Super!

The Tea_Katoh podcast is a Japanese podcast by a self-proclaimed "pessimistic optimist. An extremely normal office worker" (probably not the kind of office workers that Andrea and Mark portray in the upcoming "I Hate My Job" video) who had very nice words to say about Makar:

"I hope you keep on making good music you like and anybody knows your music in the world!"

The host, Elizabeth, says "Another Day by the amazing Makar".

They're a really excellent band."

We are blushing...

About The Ginger Bohemian Podcast (in the words of the host)

"The Ginger Bohemian Podcast is basically a show featuring really great music. Since I began listening to podcasts about a year ago I have wanted to create one of my own. My original concept was for a New England music podcast, featuring bands located in the US states of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Although I still plan on featuring New England based groups and artists, I eventually decided not to limit my choices by region. Essentially, I play songs that I come across and absolutely adore. IT'S A HONEY OF A TIME ON THE OUTLAW PUNK PODCAST
Monday November 6, 2006 at 11:17 pm

The Outlaw Punk Podcast has played "Honey-Colored Time"!

Just listen here to episode 12

The host says, "They have some really great music, I was quite impressed."

YEE-HAW!!!

ABOUT OUTLAW PUNK This is the podcast to introduce crunched-up straw hats and shit-kick'n Cowboy to the spiked wristbands and green hair punks.

Up Colfax Avenue, from Larimer Street near Jack Kerouac stomping ground is where the beginnings of Outlaw Punk began. The 15th Street Tavern, home to the LoDo Slammers, serves up cold beer and a great heaping of Punk bands. Being from Texas and spending time in Honky Tonk junks, it was enjoyable to step away from the dull pop of country to the rocking Punk culture. Just think Hank Williams taking a slide from traditional country but did not dance away from the cowboy swing. Outlaw Punk serves as a guide to small but emergent sounds of alt country, Cowboy Punk, Rockabilly, Southern Rock and other genres of music that highlight the gritty side Country music.

ANDREA'S POETRY NOW ONLINE!
Tuesday December 26, 2006 at 9:03 pm

We recorded some of Andrea’s poems over the holiday.

You can listen to the poems here or follow the individual links below.

Disclaimer
n. A repudiation or denial of responsibility or connection.

Sometimes truth is caught up within the fiction.

Rooms

As a child
Andrea: Remembering hanging upside down on my bed as a child brought about this poem.

Thinkeasy
All technology outdates itself eventually.

The yellow-jacket couch actually existed, a former Bukowski wannabee roommate carted the discarded item back to their self-created hovel of an apartment in pre-hipster Williamsburg. It was definitely more than a mere description of the color.

After Autumn

This is Andrea's poem that the song "After Autumn" springs from.

An aside: Some people have asked if the song is about 9-11. It was never meant to be, but it was the song that Andrea and Mark started to work on in the days shortly after the tragedy so perhaps it was colored by it.

The poem is nominally about an eclipse in Ohio back in the 1990s. The way the trees and their shadows looked in its aftermath. But it is about more than that, autumn doesn't just mean the season. It is a literal poem and it isn't.

Only a few people know what I mean and they have probably forgotten.

Cecilia

Andrea gets a little sassy reading her poem Cecilia.

You can also listen to these on the podsafe network.

We hope to record more in the new year!

BOY-GIRL PIANO/GUITAR AVANT-GARDE SING ALONG MUSIC
Thursday December 28, 2006 at 8:32 pm

We just got a great review by Dan Herman, host of Radio Crystal Blue on cdbaby.

Check it out, we're blushing!

boy-girl piano/guitar avant-garde sing along music

"A superb, balanced palette of drums, guitar and high crooning voices. A completely satisfying album with no real start or endpoint to it, nor concept. File it next to Velvet Underground's "Loaded" for sheer pop loveliness from your curators, Mark and Andrea. Singles include "I Hate My Job" (a rousing rant against the corporates), "Damion Day" (the requisite piano-guitar rave up, a crowd favorite). It's hard not to like the strong piano sound from Mark on "All I Know". "Honey Colored Time" has the most crossover potential...a song against the man.....but under what flag? Shimmer, slowness, even salaciousness, so much to love about this rock quartet."

GRACIAS AMIGOS!
Friday December 29, 2006 at 4:30 am

Even though we can't read or speak Spanish (well, at least not yet). This nice podcaster from Atapuerca Factory had this to say about us.

We are very thankful for all their support!

Loose translation from a friend:

They say you guys make good music, and you’re also good people. You sent them your tunes, which they enjoyed and put on their podcast.

Muchísimas gracias!

Another loose interpretation from an Atapuerca Factory listener...

You are a source of interminable surprises, Tense Joe. Had listened that of "I hate my job" and I had liked but still haven't listened to the whole LP (my bad). the thing is they remind me a lot of the Hidden Cameras and, in some themes, to the ballads of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Good melodies, we go, and those gritillos of the singer are quite curious. In short, that mill, they grind Thanks, Makar!

Andrea likes that word gritillos!

Update 2019: Original links no longer work but perhaps our friends can be found here

or here?

To paraphrase Ferris - The internet moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
