ANDREA'S POEM IS PUBLISHED IN THE 2 AM PROJECT
Monday March 19, 2012 at 8:16 pm

Andrea's poem - Before We Knew You Were Dead is published in the 2 am project.

Check it out!

http://the12amproject.tumblr.com/

or download the PDF

What happens when it reaches the morning hours? Just saying...

A little about the 12 am project : Nicolle Elizabeth started the 12 am project in the style of a black and white DIY punk zine after a few years in indie publishing. The 12 am issue was politically themed. The 1 am project was a dark pulpy issue and this year’s 2 am project seems to also be dark. The issue is online but 250 copies of each year have been known to float around punk rock shows at dives near and far.

Nicolle also wrote to celebrities such as James Greer from Guided by Voices. Greer said no but his rejection letter is online and starts off the whole 2 am issue!

Please check out the issue online or wherever you can find it.

MAKAR WRITTEN UP IN THOSE WHO DIG
Tuesday March 20, 2012 at 7:24 pm

MAKAR is written up in the latest Weekly Roundup at Those Who Dig

Check it out!
http://thosewhodig.net/article/weekly-roundup-mar-11-17-2012/753/

A little about Those Who Dig (in their own words):
We at TWD hope to deliver music to your ears that isn't just about the sound and the reputation. While we love and respect current music, good music has no limits on era or genre. Along with the new and hot, we'll explore the canon which came before and the inspiration and soul behind all the music you love. Finally, The Dig occasionally likes to wax philosophic about music theory and nature of art and music. We'll keep your brain on its toes

INCREDIBLE REVIEW OF FUNERAL GENIUS IN RUST MAGAZINE
Tuesday March 20, 2012 at 8:04 pm

MAKAR received an AMAZING review from Rust Magazine written by Eric Peterson!

Humbled and inspired doesn't even cover how we feel. Thank you Eric Peterson. You seriously ROCK!!!!

Check it out!
http://www.rustzine.com/RUST/Makar_Funeral_Genius.html

Or click on this PDF.

Additional email comments from Eric Peterson:

Thanks so much for sending a "real" copy of your album. I can't tell you how much of a difference it makes listening to it on my 1,600 watt system rather than on my computer speakers.

RUST was started with a real vision to "help" bands like you - not that you need help, you're obviously well capable in every way. But I felt that the indie music press, even when it did a good job, was doing a bad job in providing the public with information about bands that deserved it, like you. On the one hand you've got junior writers saying stupid stuff, and even when they write good articles it can take months for them to get published, missing the critical release window.

Really, I am so impressed with this album and you, and I hope that this article affects even one single person to give you some attention. If you ever get to Atlanta I'd love to shoot some video of you, so keep in touch.

Thanks again, Eric

MAKAR ROCKED THE R BAR SATURDAY APRIL 28!!
Tuesday May 1, 2012 at 9:04 pm

MAKAR ROCKED the beautiful RBar Saturday night!! It was an amazing show...live videos to follow with Andrea and Mark sandwiched between two stripper poles just trying to lay down some folk rockin' on the people! And by the Gods did we! The beer flowed, the music slayed, and the stripper poles beckoned yet no strong lad or lovely lass took up the challenge. Next time Makar will answer the call!

Afterwards we and some dear friends partook in a glorious feast at the Gentleman Farmer restaurant on 40 Rivington, and the host was so nice he put our gear downstairs as it couldn't have fit in the charmingly petite restaurant. Four stars for service and food at this lovely restaurant. Make sure you stop by for dinner! Amazing.

The show was presented by TurnStyle Music Group . Thanks to Brian, Battle Maiden and The Violet Hour for putting on such a great show.

And a huge THANKS to all the wonderful folks who came out to show their support for the indie rock star arts!! Love, Makar

PS: videos below!

FUNERAL GENIUS GETS A GREAT REVIEW ON RINGMASTER 6/13/2012
Thursday June 14, 2012 at 4:06 pm

Thanks RingMaster for giving Funeral Genius a sterling review! And thanks for the love shown to our bassman extraordinaire, Mark Nilges!

"Tracks like Bottle of Beauty mixes things up nicely on the release with Purnell taking the vocal lead whilst I Can’t Tell You To Stay offers a compelling bluesy groove to its flow though Nilges is the star on this particular track. The song twists and turns continually throughout to make for one of the more unpredictable and delightfully thrilling songs on the release."

MAKAR IS BADASS BANDS' 47TH BADASS BAND
Monday August 13, 2012 at 3:00 pm

Just a little taste of the magic:

"Jonesing for a dynamic guy/girl duo to add to your music repertoire? Look no further music lovers. Not only is this duo talented musically, they are after this music fiend’s own heart considering that the members are writers aside from their songwriting, Andrea is even a published poet. They are quite out of the ordinary as you will find in listening to their tunes, and their range is broad which offers ear solace to any kind of music lover. Badass Band 47 is New York’s MAKAR. "

MAKAR IS RUST MAGAZINE'S CRITIC'S PICK!
Monday November 26, 2012 at 7:04 pm

We, again, are blown away by Rust Magazine's end of the year roundup!

CRITIC'S CHOICE AWARD: MAKAR'S FUNERAL GENIUS

“Husband and wife team Andrea DeAngelis and Mark Purnell are joined by Mark Nilges and Dawn McGrath on this indie-rock masterpiece. Mixing poetry, piano, rock, rebellion and a good whiff of their NYC home streets, the result is hands-down the ultimate hipster album. Irreverent and absurd at times, at others biting and witty, there's something a little "off" about MAKAR, but that's what makes them so perfect. They're a little flaky, and a little kooky, but before you know it, they've just kicked your ass with a previously-unimaginably tight series of ideas and phrases that leave your head spinning while trying to catch up with what they're saying next. If you don't remember to pick up this album right now, that's ok, you'll be hearing about it for years as other bands point to it as inspiration.”

MAKAR CHARTED ON COLLEGE RADIO CHARTS IN SEPTEMBER 2012
Friday December 14, 2012 at 7:56 pm

With a lot of elbow grease, love and just general overall OCD, MAKAR's album Funeral Genius charted on the College Radio Charts on September 18, 2012.

We come in at #498 out of 571 spots – with 48 stations reporting. Pretty cool for an indie band that could.

We're especially thrilled to be ahead of Rush.

if you're wondering where this nifty photo comes from - it's all public domain from the Library of Congress! The caption reads - "Washington, D.C. A radio is company for this girl in her boardinghouse room"

FUNERAL GENIUS WAS PLAYED ON WFDU'S NEW MUSIC SMORGASBORD
Tuesday December 18, 2012 at 8:55 pm

Makar's song Funeral Genius was played on WFDU's New Music Smorgasbord on November 11, 2012.

A little about WFDU’s New Music Smorgasbord

Sundays 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM Eastern Time

Big Al has worked WFDU for 29 years, playing a wide variety of independent releases (domestic and imported) from every genre in the new rotation, plus the occasional gem located deep within the dusty WFDU archives.

Al isn’t picky – he listens to all kinds of music and also enjoys his shortwave radio. He’s worked the overnight shift longer than anyone in the history of WFDU, meaning he has lots of stories. Al once heard an explosion one Sunday morning after his show and called the station manager because the studio lost power. It turned out that a squirrel went for a walk on the electrical lines and transformer. The charred remains of the squirrel were found near the radio station pathway.

Thank you Al for playing MAKAR. We cross our fingers for the safety of squirrels (even though Mark is freaked out by their big teeth).

ANDREA'S POEM PUBLISHED IN THE SHOUT!
Tuesday December 18, 2012 at 10:13 pm

Andrea's poem - in the sink of the undigested morning - is published in the inaugural issue of The Shout.

You can also read it here.

some marginalia:
Andrea is especially loving her bio on p.46 - "Andrea DeAngelis is a poet, a novelist persevering after a decade and 1,000 plus pages, and a lo-fi guitarist in a punk-folk band."

What the editor Caleb said when this poem was first submitted... “Indeed the imagery is strong and though you say it is not beautiful, I believe I disagree (though it is not the sort of beauty not found on magazine covers).”

A little about The Shout

"Four years in the making, The Shout started out as an internship alternative when a more traditional internship fell through. The initial goal was to produce an in-print literary magazine. Submissions poured in. Adventures in formatting occurred. A first issue was set, and a second issue was in production. Then, tragedy! Ottoman Press lacked the funds to actually print the magazine. Time passed, and an idea struck us: let’s go electronic. The creative juices flowed swiftly once more. And here we are, folks. A scrappy lit mag with enough punch to floor a rhino (metaphorically speaking, of course).

What was so far off and abstract is now right here in front of us."

HOORAY!

FUNERAL GENIUS IS ON THE NBTMUSICRADIO TOP 100 ALBUMS OF 2012
Tuesday December 18, 2012 at 10:16 pm

Wow, our album - Funeral Genius - is on The NBTMusicRadio's Top 100 Tracks/singles of 2012 and Top 100 Albums of 2012!

We're number #22 on their album chart and #34 on their singles chart for our song Funeral Genius!

What Martin has to say about his list –

I won’t lie to you, it’s been a hard year, but many wounds were healed as I began this top 100 tunes, because once again I realized just how much great cool, thoughtful and fun music was being made and how most of it was fiercely independent…

What you see below is just the very tip of the music brought to us, heard by us and finally adored by us. I had to leave out so much and every omission broke my heart a little, but then this would be the top 500 albums and I would never leave my desk, so for the simple sake of my sanity, I whittled it down to just 100.

From the hardest of hard rock, to the sultriest of dance moves, from cheeky indie to disturbing dream pop, here is our choice of the best of this year.

OH and if these great titles here on offer, intrigue you, amuse you, amaze you; then you DO know where to go to find them..

They are ALL played on our 24 hour stream 7 days a week.

“Expand your minds and lend me your ears while I take you through the past, present, and future of subculture music; from rockabilly to dark wave and everything in between. Put on your dance shoes and take a trip with me¸ Rocio Maciel, as I guide you “through the looking glass.”

Thank you so much DJ Rocio and Titan Radio!
