FUNERAL GENIUS
Thursday January 24, 2008

New demos are coming!

They may be only rehearsal tapes for a bit. But we're working on new songs - some you may have heard live, some that will be a surprise!

We will be playing Funeral Genius at our upcoming gig but here are some lyrics for your digestion...

Funeral Genius

The sky below is always falling
a little
Gray cakes of sound
rust
You speak late come
quiet
What space is
between us

The subway fires its shotgun start
And I just love the city a lot
despite you

Don’t go over the yellow
line
And you’ll be just
fine

You have followed me even here
my anger keeps you stalking near

Even though I know
better
Dream in blue but breathe in red-
orange
through exhaust pipe
lungs

Funny how I dream about
living
as much as I dream about
dying
Because you happen to be
a funeral
genius

What good does it
do me?
I feel the devil on my
neck
closing in, quite
a threat

The subway fires its shotgun start
And I just think about living a lot
despite you

The rhythm is sounding a lot like a subway train, the start and the stop, the jerk and the shudder! Hooray!

Wow this cool podcast Skeptiko played I Hate My Job.

www.skeptiko.com

The host says: I love the song.

About the show: The name Skeptiko comes from the ancient Greek philosophy of Skeptikos, and refers to the teachings and the traits of a school of philosophers of whom it was said "asserted nothing but only opined".

About the photography:
Andrea took this while Mark and her walked around Prospect Park. Doesn't it look like a constellation of leaves?

TUNE IN SEPTEMBER 5TH!!
September 4, 2008

We are very excited to be played on The Devils Kitchen Radio!

Tune on on Friday the 5th of September to listen to some rocking MAKAR tunes. You can listen live here!

A little about The Devils Kitchen

Hi, we are a couple (??) of Edinburgh based country boys who enjoy a wide range of genres as you'll have noticed. You're also likely to hear the occasionally clinically insane or just purely eccentric.

Put simply, if we like it we'll probably play it at some time! We also have an aversion to the purely commercial. If its in the pop charts, it's likely it won't make the playlist, unless it's an old classic reappearing. Or that rarity, a modern classic. But hey, you wouldn't be listening to us if that was what you were looking for just now would you? And to top it off we have the mysterious Todius to look after us.

Happy days.

RED STAR VIDEOS UPLOADED!
Thursday February 19, 2009 at 3:45 pm

All the juicy gig details here:

Sorry these videos are so dark. It was very dark in the room except for the epilepsy inducing stage lights. The sound guy did warn us though but we thought it would be cool but then the lights started making us dizzy or maybe that was the nerves or maybe excitement or “maybe, it’s both.” (Sorry had to throw in a Gump quote for Mark since all men love to quote Gump and Scarface).

We thought we had broken the MAKAR curse.

Have we told you about that curse? Well, if you come to our gigs on a regular basis, you will notice that you can predict rain better than rheumatic arthritis. If there is a MAKAR gig on the calendar, there won’t be clear skies.

Well, that didn’t happen on V-Day! Hooray, it was clear skies all the way but the L-train wasn’t running which made getting to our gig difficult since no one understands the G train except those that live near the G.

Also the sound guy Jason (chchchch...you know that Friday the 13th sound) added, "Only an asshole would bring his girl out to a sports bar on Valentine's Day." Hmmm...or rabid MAKAR fans. But we didn't see the maple syrup weirdo this time...huh?

I blame it on the L train.

So see what you missed!

Check it out under our video tab

2019 Update - in hindsight, these videos were way too dark to even keep around for posterity. So you would have had to be there to experience it. Not everything will be available even in the recesses of the interweb.

Andrea's poem Celluloid Angel is featured in Mad Swirl's poetry forum.

Two more of Andrea's poems - Go away and Skulk - are also published on MadSwirl.com.

You can check out Andrea's full profile here.

Mad Swirl is a platform, a showcase and a stage for the many artists in this mad, mad world of ours. mad swirl is the collection of as many poets, artists, writers, illustrators and photographers that we could gather. mad swirl takes the many sides of art and showcases it between a front and back cover, a www and a dot com and on stage at Absinthe Lounge in Dallas. mad swirl recognizes the madness of creation, the madness of life, the madness of art and tries to get the mad swirl of it all into as many heads as possible. basically, mad swirl is an outlet...an electronic, print and live-wired creative outlet.

Andrea is very excited to be a part of this artistic community!

This poem was inspired by "A Cyborg Manifesto" an essay written by Donna Haraway

2019 Update - Andrea’s poem has disappeared since Mad Swirl has revamped their site but never fear, soon these will be made into some kind of analog cyborg mutation.

ANDREA'S POEM BEATRICE PUBLISHED IN SALOME MAGAZINE
Tuesday April 7, 2009 at 2:05 pm

Andrea's poem Beatrice published in Salome Magazine.

Click here for the link to the full poem.

This poem was inspired by the story of Beatrice Cenci

Now a little about Salome Magazine
Salome as a mythological character ties into these goals of reinvention as a revolutionary figure. As women we are still objects of sexual desire. We are participating in this "dance" as a matter of course, but we are also preparing our demands and revisiting our desires. My vision for this website is to create an safe online sanctuary where intelligent women may read weekly submissions, consider them, and provide thoughtful and respectful feedback on the issues and opinions discussed herein. Let us forge a community and come to our own individual and communal understanding about our authentic and rich veritable experiences as modern women. Salome seeks new voices, new material, and exceptional content.

Or as Mark puts it - "That's a cool site. I like the inspiration for the magazine and the whole way they are filling the vapid void with better and more intellectual media for women. There is such a dearth of intelligent magazines for women and Salome is remedying that with the help of my little honey bunny." ;0)

2019 Update - And like ether, sadly this magazine has also gone poof!

HATCHET FEATURED IN MAD SWIRL'S POETRY FORUM
Tuesday April 14, 2009 at 1:08 am

Andrea's poem "Hatchet" is featured in Mad Swirl's Poetry Forum.

Her other two poems - "Elle-maid" and "There are questions I will never ask you" are also published on Mad Swirl here.

Andrea especially liked the FB commentary this received a while ago from some literal people

EH: I thought you were just supposed to get it deeper in there ;)
JH: yeah if you pull it out it might hurt!

Now a little about Mad Swirl:

mad swirl is a platform, a showcase, a stage to place as many artists in this mad, mad world of ours. mad swirl is the collection of as many artists, writers, illustrators, photographers, psychos, and poets that we could gather. mad swirl is taking the many sides of art and showcasing it between a front and back cover, a www and a dot com and on stage at poetry/spoken word venues around Dallas. mad swirl is recognizing the madness of creation, the madness of life, the madness of art and trying to get the swirl of it all into as many heads as possible. basically, mad swirl is an outlet. an electronic, print and live-wired creative outlet.

2019 Update - Again this Mad Swirl page has swirled out of existence.

DRINKING WINE PUBLISHED IN TERRACOTTA TYPEWRITER
Wednesday April 15, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Andrea DeAngelis' poem Drinking Wine was published in the very first issue of Terracotta Typewriter .

You can download the issue here or click on the PDF within this news item.

Some background on this poem:

DeAngelis: It's a translation / inspiration based on the famous poem of the same name by T'ao Ch'ien. I do not speak or read Chinese so it's an interpretation of the well-known translation by Andrea Bangert.

This fits in nicely with Terracotta Typewriter's mission to create a creative outlet for those with a connection to China.

More about Terracotta Typewriter:
Terracotta Typewriter is an online literary journal with Chinese characteristics. This is the only China-themed English-language literary journal. This site is the creation of American expatriate writer and editor in China, Matthew Lubin. The purpose of this literary journal is to create a creative outlet for those with a connection to China.

WHAT CAN YOU SAY IN SIX SENTENCES?
Friday April 17, 2009 at 7:52 pm

Because Andrea said this -

Children are always beautiful.

Now you do it. Seriously!

Six consecutive sentences. No poems, no bullets. The title of your piece should be no longer than 36 characters.

Update 2019 - You always want to read what you can’t have. This site has also perished with the marching ants of time.

ANDREA'S STORY PUBLISHED IN DOGMATIKA
Tuesday April 21, 2009 at 3:26 pm

Andrea's story - Someone was trying to bee-bee gun the cat - was published in Dogmatika on Monday, April 20th.

A little about Dogmatika

Widely lauded for its content, Dogmatika has been described as “sharp, street-wise and savvy” [Kevin Williamson, poet & founder of Rebel Inc] and “one of the best places to get your writing seen” [Dazed & Confused Magazine]. Dogmatika has been honoured twice by the Millions Writers Awards [Notable Stories of 2006 & 2007] and was Laura Hird’s Litmag of the Season [Winter/Spring 2008].

Update 2019 - Ten years is a millennia in internet years so the page with Andrea’s story is gone Daddy, gone!

Andrea's poem "We shall drown you in the sea" was published in Salome Magazine.

Click here for the link to the full poem.

Andrea's other poem Beatrice was published earlier this month.

This poem is about Lilith and the aftermath of being thrown out of the Garden of Eden and imagining her desire to speak to Eve about Adam.

Update 2019 - Obviously, Lilith wasn’t very happy with my poem about her and thus this publication has been washed away.
