MAKAR INTERVIEW 2000 ON WUSB 90.1 FM
Friday April 1, 2005

This is MAKAR’s first and only radio interview on Stony Brook’s WUSB 90.1 FM on Kate Marlborourgh’s “Don’t Look Now” show. You'll understand why once you hear Andrea try to read a PA announcement while on cold medication (or at least that's her excuse). Also for MAKAR archivists this contains a really REALLY old version of The Monkey recorded by Dan Coates, Mark and Andrea in his "Waiting Room" studios in Hackensack, New Jersey. You can see some lovely pictures of that venture under Hackensack, NJ in the pictures section

THE MAPLE SYRUP WEIRDO (JANUARY 2005)
Wednesday April 13, 2005

ah...New York...

so MAKAR is strolling off to rehearsal on this wintery evening and on the way to the yellow line (catching a cab on the corner) this strange thin dude is walking circles in the snowy sidewalk. They pass him and Mark notices he is holding a bottle of maple syrup. He just has this freakish vibe. Andrea finds this amusing and starts to sing quietly, "people are strange..."

Of course, the little weirdo probably heard this and decides this is a mating call or something. He follows the dynamic duo from a distance circling like a lunatic vulture. Andrea is now uncomfortably laughing. Mark gives the freaky dude a look. He ducks back.

They've reached the corner and Andrea has to mail a letter. The freak takes this opportunity to approach Mark but not say anything but smile like a nutter swimming in a fruitcake. He makes as if he is going into the diner on the corner but comes closer to Mark. At that point Mark blocks him with the biggest umbrella in the world Avengers style.

The freak leaves.

Mark and Andrea wonder is maybe he's only a fan and they abused him unnecessarily. Or maybe it's just NYC and everyday a new weirdo...

So please check out Radio Crystal Blue (http://www.radiocrystalblue.com/) and Ari Scott’s homepage (http://www.ariscott.com).

We also finished the album this weekend! Now for a magic trip to the post office to send to be mastered and manufactured and it will be ready sometime in late May. And we will have a new and improved website up and running by then as well. So lots and lots to look forward to.

RIOTLAND COMICS MARCH 2005 INTERVIEW WITH MAKAR
Wednesday August 3, 2005

This is an interview conducted by Tony Killerbrew on his zine Riotland Comics Super Smash Media Online Zine for March 2005.

"This month we have an interview with a group from New York called  Makar, who are just a great band and should be sought out and listened to by all. Makar are currently in the studio and should have some new stuff out real soon."

1. Who is everyone and what do you do?

Mark Purnell: First off, Makar would like to say a big thank you for interviewing us and being interested in our band! You rock Tony!

Makar, is a New York based Indie-Rock band that writes its own songs and plays its own instruments. No lip-synching, pitch-correction or dance steps involved, just pure from the heart (and sometimes the funny bone) music. We’ve played lots of NY clubs such as Luna Lounge, CBGBs Gallery, the Hook, Pianos, Knitting Factory, Galapagos and others and had a blast doing it.

We’re releasing our debut 18-song album, 99 Cent Dreams, at the end of March 2005 on www.cdbaby.com, so we’re incredibly excited about that. We’ve been working on it for 2-1/2 years on the weekends and we’re definitely ready to set it free on the music world!!  We plan to gig a lot to promote it and do local and regional tours this summer and into the Fall. We named the album 99 Cent Dreams after a 99 Cent Dream store in Hackensack. The idea that a store could be selling dreams for 99 cents really appealed to us. Songs usually cost 99 cents a piece and in my opinion are like little dreams so we ran with it!

Makar has had a few incarnations since we began in 2002, but the album consists of the original lineup, which was a 5-piece band with my wife Andrea DeAngelis singing, songwriting and rocking acoustic and slide guitar, Jorge Arias banging on the drums all day, Dan Coates rocking the bass, Vince Viray singing, songwriting and rocking acoustic guitar, and myself, Mark Purnell singing, songwriting, and rocking piano!

Right now, Makar is just putting the finishing touches (mastering and artwork) on the album and not playing out due to the loss of our lineup. Unfortunately, Vince went West to California to follow a family biz dream and Jorge, who is a full time architect when he’s not beating the pig skins, most likely will have to leave the country to fulfill the requirements of his Fulbright scholarship, which require him to go back to his country of origin, Argentina, for 2 years! So Makar is down, but not out. If Jorge wins his appeal and doesn’t get deported maybe we’ll ply him with enough liquor to get him back into the fold and Vince has been missing the band even though he’s all the way out in San Francisco starting a funky t-shirt biz with his sisters, so maybe we can get him back too. But if things don’t workout and we can’t get our original lineup back we plan to look for a new drummer and bass player and get out there as soon as they’re up to speed with the songs. We really can’t wait to play out again!

2. How would you describe your sound?

Andrea DeAngelis: Actually, other people have said it best. Kathi Merrick at indieradiolive.com called us “retro/alternative folk” music, and that sounds about right. We just do what we do, but we’re Indie at heart.

Mark: Thoughtful, fun, rocking and quirky.

3. Who are you influences?

Andrea: Everyone. I like all kinds of music from the Sex Pistols to Willy Nelson to Outkast. Just got the latest Modest Mouse CD and am blown away. Whenever an artist does something unique you have to give it up to them. Sometimes, certain artists have influenced me directly when writing a song. I’ll give two examples. With “Honey-Colored Time”, a slide guitar song of ours, I tried to write that song from Mr. Jimmy’s perspective in The Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” I was also pissed off by some inane, cookie-cutter lyrics from a song playing on the radio at the time and wanted to write something to purge that awful let down from my mind.

And “I Hate My Job” started out with me wanting to write something punk rockish (as much as Makar can do that) because I was listening to the Sex Pistols, Greenday, Everclear and Offspring a lot. But that being said, I’m sure the Beatles have infected everything that I do. A short list? The Beatles, Bowie, T. Rex, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez and Richard Farina, Bjork, Blondie, The Cars, The Zombies, Nick Drake, Love, Radiohead, U2. God, there are so many, it is silly to even try to name them.

Mark: Yeah, that’ll do me!

4. Do you have any good stories from shows you have played?

Andrea: M.E.A.N.Y. Fest 2004 last fall was one of the funniest and weirdest shows we ever played. The whole night bands played that were very un-MAKAR-like. They were hard-core bands and their crowd was hard-core, so it was a bit more nerve-racking than usual for us, because we thought we’d be playing to a very indifferent audience. But we really didn’t have anything to worry about because the artist before us managed to clear out the entire room. He played solo on an electric viola and a beat box. To say that the crowd didn’t get him is an understatement. They ran, not walked, to the exits.

Three of us were sick that night on top of it all. I had been to the emergency room the day before suffering from a severe sinus infection. I was on so many kinds of cold medication I couldn’t see right. Mark was sick as well, we must have gone through 2 boxes of tissues in the van. Then our set time was shortened to 20 minutes instead of 25, because after the viola guy the judges just wanted to get the hell out of there. So we had to blast through I Hate My Job, The Country Song, The Monkey, Worth It, and Damion Day.

During The Monkey, I managed to knock into Mark’s mic and send it crashing into his forehead. Mark didn’t know what had happened at first because his eyes were closed. He just felt the mic whack him in the head. The bass player and I could barely see straight we were laughing so hard, while Mark, bewildered and befuddled, look around for a mic that had just been in front of his mouth a minute ago. But Jorge kept drumming like the Argentinian madman that he is, Mark finally came to his senses, located the mic and kept on singing, and we rocked out the rest of the set. It was a fun night, even though only 6 people were left in the audience. On the positive side, the judges and sound guy said they really loved our music and were pulling for us. And all 6 people voted for us, but what the hell were 6 votes going to do?!!

Mark: Yup, me forehead still smarts when I think about that magical and mystical night, but I’ve learned to make sure me mic is far removed from the Pete Townshend swirls of me Rockin’ love kitten. Had to learn the hard way, but I learned cause mama didn’t raise her no fool.

5. So who do you like better? The Beatles or the Stones?

Andrea: I have always been a Beatles fan first and foremost.

Mark: She’s a Beatles Fanatic!!! The girl gone crazy for the mop tops.

Andrea: But that being said, The Stones are just amazing and fun. I’ve just started listening to Let It Bleed and I just love that album. Sometimes I feel like the best Stones albums could be culled from the “album filler”. Because on Beggar’s Banquet the “hits” don’t seem to fit. I like to listen to that album without Street Fighting Man and Sympathy for the Devil although Sympathy is one of my favorite songs of all time. But on Beggar’s Banquet, I just can’t stop listening to Jigsaw Puzzle and on Let It Bleed, I just love the title track to death. But when you listen to any phenomenal band like U2, Radiohead, The Rolling Stones and The Who and then you put on the Beatles there is no comparison. And there never should be.

Mark: Well, it’s hard to say, because they’re both such phenomenal bands and one of the five main pillars of Rock music (Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Elvis being the other three), but since you be pressing me to throw down the Beatles/Stones’ gauntlet I have to give it up to the Beatles as well. Mainly because they paved the way for the Stones and every other sixties band to make it. They wrote some of the Stone’s earliest hits and really helped them along the way. Also, the Beatles have the bigger hits and a greater number of them. And I happen to love John Lennon above all other musical artists, except maybe the King, so that about seals the deal. Elvis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry, put Rock on the map, but the Beatles brought it to a larger audience and gave it a lot of artistic credibility. Their artistic development from a fluffy, but incredibly hooky pop band to a group of highly evolved, ground breaking artists pushing music to its outer limits creatively speaking in only 12 years and in a way that no other band had ever done, puts them ahead of the Stones as well.

At first I thought the Stones rocked harder than the Beatles, but if you listen to Lennon on “Twist and Shout” or McCartney singing “Long Tall Sally” you realize the lads could blow the tops off any group out there if that’s the way they had wanted go. But hard raucous Rock and Blues wasn’t the only color they had, unlike the Stones. They had every color of the musical spectrum available to them and they used it like the masters they were. So hands down the Beatles! But that doesn’t mean I don’t love the Stones completely and without question and thank the good lord above for creating them and blessing them with unearthly and amazing powers of Rock n’ Roll!!! I mean Exile on Main Street and Beggars Banquet??? WOW!!!

KALX PLAYS MAKAR!!!!!!!
Wednesday August 3, 2005

Woo-hoo and out of the blue! This was so cool.

Just a little info about KALX...

KALX began its life in a one-room country shack in the backwoods of Tennessee. Okay, not really. KALX began its life in a cigar box in the dormitories of UC Berkeley in the Spring of 1962. Yes, really: a cigar box was used to build the first on-air board used by Radio KAL.

Some nifty quotes

Tuesday August 9, 2005

Makar's debut 18-song album 99 Cent Dreams was selected to be played on Yellow Beat http://www.yellowbeat.com (a Japanese Radio Station).

Yellow Beat is a bilingual music entertainment radio program playing all kinds of music from all over the world of all times, no prejudice towards any music, no limit towards music genre. "Love" (in all it's wondrous ways) and "Hope" are the key concept of the show. The music speaks for itself and so, there is very little talk.

The name Yellow Beat comes from an existing small Honda convertible in Japan called the "Beat". baby Gremlin and baby Magic own this Beat convertible, a Yellow one since 1991. Running, with the music on the Yellow Beat. Taking those who still believe in music, on a ride with us on our Yellow Beat, down the city, hanging out with friends, new friends, etc. going on an outing, stopping at the diner, and finally, to that lost horizon.

GREAT REVIEW FROM DAVID BYRNE'S COLUMN IN WINDY CITY TIMES
Thursday August 18, 2005

"The New York music scene recently flourished with electro and ‘80s-inspired bands, the band Makar is a breath of fresh air with its full-length debut 99 Cent Dreams. Timeless folk-based pop gems manifest Makar’s 99 Cent Dreams. The opening track “I Hate My Job” offers everyday man fantasies about leaving the 9 to 5 drudge to become a rockstar. The standout tune “What Can I Tell” also appears on the compilation Freshly Squeezed Music vol. 1. Husband and wife Mark Purnell and Andrea DeAngelis not only share lead vocal duties, but also co-wrote 15 of the 18 songs jointly and arranged the album’s artwork. Purnell’s voice is surprisingly theatrical and DeAngelis, who proved her own at various poetry recitals in the Big Apple, flavorfully adds chirps, complementing the cadence. 99 Cent Dreams is available through cdbaby.com."

WHAT CAN I TELL YOU IS HOT HOT HOT!

Tuesday August 23, 2005

THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO, hosted by Dan Bonn and Carl Cafarelli played "What Can I Tell You" and had this to say about it:

Well, lotsa new stuff this week on THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO with Dana & Carl, so we'd best get t' goin'. We opened the show with a real treat, an exclusive brand-new track from long-time TIRnRR faves THE OOHS! From The Oohs' forthcoming album LLAMALAMP, we offered the world radio premiere of "That's What She Said!," fulfilling our persistent promise to give you all the Oohs you can use. Also new this week were tracks from THE KOOTZ (debut album TALES FROM THE ENDLESS BUS TOUR OF NEW JERESEY, featuring Chris Breetveld of The Breetles, promising "Rock 'n' roll with fiber!"), MAKAR (ace tune from the group's 99 CENT DREAMS album), DENNIS MOST & THE INSTIGATORS (with VAMPIRE CITY, on the Trash 2001 label), new Wizzard In Vinyl label releases from RICHARD ORANGE and THE LET'S GO'S, and a teaser track from the soon-to-be-released new album from some guys called BIG STAR, an act with whom a few of you may be familiar, we suspect....

Hey, Little Steven has his "Coolest Song In The World," but we've always had our own ever-changing GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! This week's worthy nominee for that title was requested by our ol' pal Dave Murray, who's canonized "Get Your Own" by ALICE PEACOCK as The Coolest Song In...sorry, make that THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE! Remember, as always: an infinite number of songs can truly be THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE, as long as they take turns. (And if YOU have a song you want Dana & Carl to recognize as THE GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE, shouldn't you let us know, or something?)

Otherwise, recent faves from THE VOLEBEATS, THE LEN PRICE 3, ASTROPUPPEES and THE CONDORS rubbed thighbones with RAY PAUL, DAVID RUFFIN, THE FIVE AMERICANS, HANK WILLIAMS, THE RAMONES, BRIAN LINDSAY, THE ARCHIES, THE OTHER KIDS, CARROTS, THE CATHOLIC GIRLS, THE DAVE CLARK 5, STEVE BARTON, ANNY CELSI, THE BRISTOLS (covering The Pete Best Combo!), THE GO, LUGLESS BOOTH (from our own essential THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO compilation CD), STATUS QUO, ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN, OCTOBER ELSEWHERE, SCREEN TEST, THE LONG RYDERS, JOE JACKSON, COTTON MATHER and THE RUTLES. All this, and yet another Pick-Hit from www.littlehits.com, this week in the irresistible form of "Nothing's From Today" by THE VIPERS.

You can support our pathetic efforts at slappin' together THE BEST THREE HOURS OF RADIO ON THE WHOLE FRIGGIN' PLANET with a generous TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATION to Syracuse Community Radio, 826 Euclid Avenue, Syracuse, NY 13210, or via PayPal to subscribe@wxxe.org. If you prefer to be deleted from our weekly greetings, please let us know. And this is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.

THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO, hosted by Dan Bonn and Carl Cafarelli, airs Sunday nights from 9 to midnight Eastern (with reruns during the day on Wednesday) on WXXE-FM in Syracuse, NY, and on the web at www.wxxe.org.

FOUR STAR CD BABEL REVIEW!!!
Wednesday August 24, 2005

In an email, E Jeff Einowski, Editor-in-Chief wrote this week--

"Hey Andrea,

I know this is random, but I'm going to do some editing on your review pretty soon.  The more I listen to your album, the more I love it.

The sound is just so different, your style is where it’s at. Even the recording quality problems I had went away when I really became familiar with the sonic quality.  I wouldn't want your album to sound any other way.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Your Listener,
-E Jeff Einowski"

MAKAR's music is strangely normal. They play their instruments like they were in a punk band...but the music they are playing is very classic sixties rock. The result is a feel somewhere in-between the Sex Pistols and Lovin' Spoonful. Makar's Lyrics are wonderful. Simply put I find myself addicted to them. A song like "Lost Voices" doesn't come along every day, nor a musing like "The Country Song." The vocalist duet is right out of Belle & Sebastian, except the mans voice is deeper. This makes for a nice contrast. Both voices carry the sort of inner humor that allows them to make serious lyrics fun. The bands sound takes some getting used to and the first song will most likely scare you away, but if you listen to this CD a couple of times you will start to notice that there is some real genius behind the lyrics and the sound.

MAKAR SELECTED TO RADIO CRYSTAL BLUE'S ANNUAL FUTURE STARS AIRPLAY SERIES!!!!!
Friday September 2, 2005

Hello. Dan Herman of Radio Crystal Blue here. I"m happy to announce that you (you being the artist or the PR rep of said artist) have been selected for my annual Future Stars airplay series.

Future Stars, in essence is a weekly series that spotlights a series of artists I deem to be above and beyond the top indie/underground artists heard on my weekly internet radio show.

For 8 weeks, beginning with the 9/4 webcast and finishing through the 10/23 webcast, I will spin 2 tracks of 10 or 11 artists that have not previously reached my highest honor "Gem of the Week".

Artists were chosen based on a combination of factors, mainly related to prior airplay and exposure (referencing acts I've booked, have seen, or have some connection to my "Gems"). More about those Gems at http://www.radiocrystalblue.com/gems.html

In all, 90 artists were chosen out of an original list of 180. 45 will be further chosen by me for future featuring, 15 of which will earn "Gem" honors. The subsequent airplay will take place between 11/05 and 2/06.

Information on where/when to listen is below in the signature. Feel free to contact me with any questions/comments.

Congrats on being selected!

A GIDDY POP ESCAPE FROM THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO
Tuesday September 6, 2005

"What Can I Tell You" continues to to get more play from ROCK 'N' Roll Radio! I think this is the 4th week in a row they've played it. Check it out:

Hello again from Dana & Carl and This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio. We know you don't need us to remind you that this has been a miserable, awful week. So this week's playlist exists in a vacuum, unaffected by the real world, a giddy pop escape. We do this not to be shallow, but merely to concede that there's nothing useful we can say in the face of such unimaginable heartbreak. Contact the Red Cross, or a local charity if you prefer, and give generously. We'll provide you with some peppy music to write checks by.

That includes new music this week from ALL TOMORROW'S PARTY and THE BLOODY HOLLIES (both on Alive Records), a pair of unreleased tracks from EYTAN MIRSKY, a farewell to the late R.L. BURNSIDE, requests for THE KINKS, THE SHAMUS TWINS and JACK "PENETRATOR" LIPTON, and, of course, the music of THE FIRE APES, FRANKIE FORD, THE MUFFS, BIG STAR, THE ISLEY BROTHERS, THE LEN PRICE 3, THE BUZZCOCKS, IMMACULATE MACHINE, THE CURE, THE LYRES, THE DIPSOMANIACS, STATUS QUO, THE BAY CITY ROLLERS, THE GRIP WEEDS and DOLENZ, JONES, BOYCE & HART. Keep writing. Don't forget to endorse it.

Send a check, dammit. And this is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.

LOVE FROM JACK FM RADIO!!!
Tuesday September 6, 2005

So over the Labor Day weekend, Makar checked their voicemail and found a super cool message from DJ Lenny Block at JACK Radio 100.3 FM.

Lenny thanked us for the "really great looking [promo] package" we sent him and said "the music sounds great and I wish you much success," but unfortunately "the station doesn't break new music!"

Well, we were just happy with kudos from a major FM station, but then he gave us two of his personal contacts at Sirius satellite radio and told us to send our package to them as satellite radio is more open to playing indie music!!! He also left his number and told us to call him if we "needed anything." What a super cool guy right? Wooooooooohooooooooooo!

So cool!

So this just goes to show you, that you never know where a lead will lead! Maybe that other package Andrea sent will actually reach Micky Dolenz from the Monkees, because right now they are Andrea's latest musical obsession. Stay tuned!

MAKAR REVIEWED BY BLUE MAG
Monday September 12, 2005

"At first it was kinda hard to wrap my brain around Makar's debut CD, 99 Cent Dreams. The album definitely harkens back to an earlier age or idea with its late 60's' Go Go guitars, community theater boy/girl vocals, and healthy dose of boogie piano. It finally hit me - Makar sounds like an early 70's rock musical, filled with furry do-gooders all oddly earnest and projecting on a stage of rainbows and karma. With a vibe that's both reverent folk revivalism and (possibly) tongue-in-cheek pastiche, 99 Cent Dreams owes as much to the "Jeepers Creepers" sketch from Mr. Show as it does to Hair. If could be a well-played goof but offers enough in terms of arrangement and melodies to cover itself in case its not. On "The Country Songs", Mark Purnell's Vanagon blues vocals are periodically interrupted by sharp yelps from second vocalist Andrea DeAngelis, leading me to picture them both in technicolor dream coats on a stage mugging for a stoned, easy going audience. DeAngelis carries "What Can I Tell You" with an enjoyable blend of the Supremes and Suzi Quatro, simultaneous lush and chrome for what's probably the album's standout song. The title track, like much of the record, is really peppy and sunny, throwing in narrative tempo changes and a big blustry coda. Closer "Andrea" turns down the starshine with some minor key emotionalism after "I Don't Know God" sways its way through some mid-tempo coffee shop existentialism. While not your average folk/pop release, 99 Cent Dreams certainly displays its fair share of musical talent and theatrical bombast. Its biggest weak point is its marathon length. 18 full tracks (i.e not Bob Pollard length) are tough to take from any artist, to say nothing of a new artist that much of the time sounds like the closing number of an old episode of Josie & the Pussycats. If you're feeling groovy however, this could be just the thing."

I HATE MY JOB HITS THE AIRWAVES AT THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO
Wednesday September 14, 2005

I Hate My Job hits the airwaves at THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO.

Listen in for this is where it all begins, folks! The email from the hosts Dana and Carl below!

Hello again from Dana & Carl and THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO. We know a lot of folks have donated generously to the Red Cross and other worthy charities to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We certainly want to encourage anyone who can to donate whatever they can to this cause, and we don't wish to take a dime away from that effort.

However, for those of us who can spare just a little bit extra, there are two extended friends of TIRnRR who were affected directly by this disaster, and they can also use your help. Susan Cowsill, best known of course as a member of THE COWSILLS, lost her home and possessions to Katrina; her brother Barry is still missing, and we pray he is recovered safely, and soon. Rebekah Zornes, a friend of long-time TIRnRR pal (and former COCKEYED GHOST frontguy) Adam Marsland, also lost everything, and will be trying to pick up her pieces as well. These are not the most tragic stories you'll hear in Katrina's wake, not by a long shot, but they are friends of friends of Dana & Carl, so we turn to you.

Give to a reputable charity to help the victims of Katrina, and give generously. Then, if you can afford to do more, consider helping Susan and Rebekah. For example: if everyone who receives this e-mail were to scrape together as little as $10, and give a fiver apiece to Susan and Rebekah, they'd each raise over $2500. We have perspective; we know there a million broken hearts and worse in the South right now, and we know that many of you may be tapped out, or that you may have other plans to help where you can. But some of you will respond to this plea, and every little bit's gotta help.

And we thank you for whatever you can do.

This week's show began with a glance back at this country's last great disaster, as we reprised our pal Lizzy in New York City's 9/11 request for ELVIS COSTELLO & THE ATTRACTIONS, and "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding?" We played a great new track from local boy TIM ANTHONY, bid farewell to everyone's Little Buddy Bob Denver, celebrated "Highway Lines" by MANNIX as this week's Coolest Song Inna...er, GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE (our enthusiasm tempered by Joe Mannix's recent announcement that he'll be retiring from the music biz; his final album is due out shortly), and played requests for THE HEATS, THE MOST, THE BLONDES and THE FLASHCUBES. God bless you all; this is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.

THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO, hosted by Dana Bonn and Carl Cafarelli, airs Sunday nights from 9 to midnight Eastern (with reruns during the day on Wednesday) on WXXE-FM in Syracuse, NY, and on the web at www.wxxe.org.

WE'RE LIKE POPULAR (ON RADIO CRYSTAL BLUE)
Thursday October 6, 2005 at 7:25 am

Radio Crystal Blue Autumn 2005 Airplay Chart Announcement in full...

Every 3 months Dan Herman the host of Radio Crystal Blue takes a survey of airplay and exposure via Radio Crystal Blue in 3 categories (1) amount of airplay in 3 months, (2) same for 12 months, and (3) a composite amount plus extra credit for acts I see and/or book in the last 3 months.

The chart itself is a reflection of the acts getting the most airplay plus a way of answering the question he gets sometimes--

"Who are the most popular acts you play?"

Airplay for purposes of this chart focused on all airplay granted to acts from July 2004 through through June 2005. The top 100 of all 3 categories were counted, and only those that placed in all 3 categories were counted for the quarterly chart.

The Best of 2005 list will be determined based on the combined rank of the 4 quarters of 2005. A de facto score, rounded to the next 25th place for those that missed a chart appearance, gets factored in afterward.

The Autumn chart can be viewed at http://www.radiocrystalblue.com/chart.html

In all, over 340 different acts received airplay in the last 12 weeks.
Only 63 got onto all 3 categories to be considered for this chart. The cut was: 2 songs played in the last 3 months, 7 songs in the last 12 months. MAKAR is number 54 out of over 340 different acts! Yippee and only like 3 behind our likewise ambitious buddies Hello Nurse.

This is a true accomplishment since we didn’t have a commercially released album until mid-June.

MAKAR LOVES HARRY POTTER!!!!
Saturday October 8, 2005 at 6:38 pm

So because we love Harry Potter, both the movies and the books we wanted to show our appreciation by sending a copy of our album to the wonderful author J.K. Rowling!

Her publisher wrote a nice letter back to us and said they would forward our gift to Ms. Rowling. They also sent the picture of her that you see on this news item.

We hope she enjoys our album as we love her books and her wonderful creativity. She's also amazingly inspirational. From single mom on the dole to billionaire author! Wow, Makar is impressed and inspired!!

LOOK MA! ANDREA IS FAMOUS!
Thursday January 12, 2006 at 7:16 pm

So Andrea wrote a letter to the editor at NY Magazine in response to their article on "Pegacide". Little did she know that it would get published.

Well, actually we thought it did have a good chance! Especially with this guy's letter—

"Pegacide is hardly the blood sport you make it out to be…"

They did trim her mad letter down a bit though...so here for your viewing pleasure is the original letter-

Love your recent issue on 123 Reasons to Love NY Right Now. But I hate to break it to you, No. 55 "A Game called Pegacide" wasn't invented in New York. As a kid, we used to play a very very similar game in Northern New Jersey called "Butts Up" back in the eighties. But there were some brutal differences (or maybe those New York kids aren't telling you something).

Once I got "pegged" in the nose after coming back from touching the wall. I bled like a banshee. And if you got three outs, you had to take a chance being pegged in the butt. You put your hands up against the wall and butt out and up (hence, butts up) and the person who pegged you last, took a shot.

Rumor has it that our elementary/middle school banished the game when some poor kid's hip bone was broken.

Now that's old school, baby.

Yeah!

As many of you know, MAKAR is part of the Best of 2005 on Radio Crystal Blue!   We were selected because of the amount of airplay we received in the 2005 calendar year, and also our relative ranking in each of the quarterly airplay charts. ATW1 ONLINE RADIO PLAYING "ANOTHER DAY" ON SATURDAY, JAN 28TH
Friday January 27, 2006 at 8:59 pm

ATW1 online radio is planning on playing "Another Day" either first or second on this Saturday's episode. That is January 28th people!

But to get the song played on ATW1 again it has to get enough requests from listeners, so request away after Saturday's show (yo!)

And listen to the show, these folks care about good underground music, something the major labels should be doing!

99 CENT DREAMS IS PUT INTO HEAVY ROTATION ON MANSION ON THE HILL
Sunday February 5, 2006 at 7:46 pm

99 Cent Dreams is put into heavy rotation last month on the radio show Mansion on the Hill blasting out of Virginia. Listen in to this cool indie music show...

Here is what they had to say...

"Not much going on here.  I just wanted to let you know that I have put the 99 Cent Dreams album into heavy rotation last month and got a really good response from listeners.  Excellent stuff.

Keeping up with the radio station almost seems to be a full time job in itself.  Just the sheer amount of e-mail to be responded to, CDs to listen to, MP3s to examine can be overwhelming, but it is still quite fun.

If there is anything I can do to further help you guys, let me know!

Talk Soon,
Mark Johnson
