Halloween Reading at Von Bar - Sunday, October 30th (for Bowery Gothic)

Calling all Creepy Literati!
A Hallow’s Eve reading!

Andrea will be reading her short story Mara along with the other Bowery Gothic contributors on Sunday, October 30th at Von Bar located at 3 Bleecker in NYC. The event starts at 6pm.

Andrea's short story Mara published in Bowery Gothic

Andrea’s piece Mara was published in Bowery Gothic on September 1st in their Summer Ghosts Edition VII.

Andrea: This story was inspired by the original nightmare known as Mara and other names in Time Life’s The Enchanted World’s Night Creatures fable. These were books I inherited from my Welsh grandfather. He had such a wonderful odd library, inspiration galore.

Here is a recent article from Atlas Obscura:

I enjoy telling stories from the perspective of the monsters and having the monsters win.

A little about Bowery Gothic

Inspired by a reading series at a haunted bar on the Bowery, Bowery Gothic is a literary journal seeking to publish the highest quality literature and art. We look for stories—both real and imagined—that exist in that liminal space: between the seen and unseen; between entertainment and fear. We are excited by work that stands at the threshold and looks into the unknown. We are excited by the sublimity of terror.

We are not interested in gore, violence, or perversion. Instead, send us literary work that transcends genre, that scares us and makes us think: Damn, that was fresh. We are drawn to literature that conjures up tales told by our favorite writers—from Henry James to Kelly Link; Shirley Jackson to Octavia E. Butler—stories that entice, amaze, terrify.

Andrea’s story Good Dirt II was published in Molotov Cocktail’s Flash Feast Contest. She got No. 5 out of 10!

A little taste

“I don’t know what I was before I was born into slow flesh, flawed and corrupting, but I know I will find the answers grubbing in the dirt”

She is very excited that Good Dirt II will be included in a future Molotov Cocktail’s Prize Winners Anthology print issue.

Please sink your teeth into the entire Flash Feast issue!

And congrats to all the winners!

Devil in a Dream Part I - Music Video

We felt the need to creep you out a little bit before we film our music video for Devil in a Dream Part II.

So here is Devil in a Dream

This is a song we recorded on a handheld recorder on the third floor of my parent’s house back in the early aughts. We could never seem to capture the magic of the off-the-cuff version so we decided to put that version out on our second album Funeral Genius as the last track.

Fantastic Review of I'm Alright on Music Existence

We received a fantastic review of our song I’m Alright on Music Existence:

It’s hard to pick a fav section in this review. But we think it’s this:

“Knowing that they have the street credit, the indie rock darlings of the world, I rooted for Makar’s overall essence. It’s like walking into a vintage store, all the yellows, the greens, the rust colors – and feeling an overwhelming sense of sunshine and love. They somehow embody this punk world but let in shards of light and optimism. If they were a periodical, Makar would be the homemade kind you used to grab on your way out of the downtown record stores. Someone took the time to make a run to Kinkos and make those music rags.”

Neufutur Magazine Review of Zombies Have Rights Too

A sweet review of our song Zombies Have Rights Too on Neufutur Magazine.

“Husband and wife duo, Makar, have another cooler-than-you-think gem with their new Halloween-inspired hit, “Zombies Have Rights Too”. Or is it inspired by the undead? Perhaps a nefarious monster is behind the song, or maybe it’s presented as a nod to the folks that just don’t get the same attention or love as they deserve. The tight sound, the airy melodies and the quirky beat is what makes Makar oh-so-good.”

Writer, Kim Muncie, went into such a deep dive on this song!

“I felt like there was a deeper layer to this, that the idea of being isolated and alone is universal. I think in a lot of ways, as a society we are zombies. We are always looking ahead, and not always truly looking at the people around us or even in the mirror.”

We love this review and zombies will love it.

Vents Single Review of Zombies Have Rights Too

Wow. We received such a great review from Vents Magazine for our song Zombies Have Rights Too.

The new song “Zombies Have Rights Too” is a quick, but altogether trek. I loved the haunting vibe meshed with a folky-pop-rock residue. Makar, the husband-wife duo made up of Andrea DeAngelis and Mark Purnell, behind this trippy jaunt, embellishes the song with dreamy pop percussion (sounding a lot like bongos) with oohs and awes. Someone to love…zombie love, DeAngelis sings. The fresh, almost warm acoustic guitar elevates the heat, in almost a way that feels golden. I suppose if you’re looking for a song that goes ‘haunt in the night’ this might not be the midnight madness you seek. Rather, it’s an endearing look, albeit quick, look at a group that often gets overlooked. Zombies need love too; you will be singing away.

“Zombies Have Rights Too” is from the forthcoming album (due November 19) Fancy Hercules. Purnell notes in the band’s press materials that they never run out of ideas for songs. Judging by their track record, and their newest release, Makar are bound to turn some heads and ears. “Zombies Have Rights Too” might find itself smooshed alongside other Halloween tracks, but it’s fair to say that it belongs in a whole new indie category. Makar have honed their sound, and this is just a scrumptious track to get behind. The music video, too, is just as fun. It’s a bit off kilter – and who doesn’t like a bizarre zombie and monster couple having a candlelit dinner in their apartment? Gnarly teeth and some burgundy fake blood, and you have yourself a riot of a music video.”

Thank you Vents and writer Jennifer Munoz!
